
The University of Canterbury had three founding Professors: Charles Cook, Mathematics, St John's College, Cambridge; Alexander Bickerton, Chemistry and Physics, School of Mining, London; and John Macmillan Brown, Balliol College, Oxford. Founded in 1873, it is New Zealand's second-oldest university. It operates its main campus in the suburb of Ilam in the city of Christchurch, New Zealand.
